I had a similar situation with EVE:

1. install game
2. marvel at the graphics
3. spend hours working the shit out
4. fly about a bit and mine.
5. Join a party thinking "oh thats nice, somebody wants to help or talk to me
6. Get blown to smithereeens.
7. Uninstall, start playing WoW.

Aye, happened last time I unsubbed, as today, bought a nice big ship with all my cash then got bummed on my first trip out flying between point A and B
It's all out war though and they do kind of warn ye it's the nature of the beast from day one, it would just be nice to have such a crippling penalty for randomly coming across a guy with a bigger stick when you're a little more financially prepared for it if ye know what I mean. it's a lazy 2 hours ratting in 0.0, don't worry about it, get yourself in a ship and splash out on some named T1 gear to bump up your DPS/tank

I've done a fair few of them. Currently on 'Buring down the Hive' from this chain http://keithneilson.co.uk/eve-epic-mission-arc-guide-part-7/. The mobs blew me to smithereens in a carachal when I first tried it and neared wiped in in my paper tiger Coercer. I was kitting out a new ship to finish it when I got blarked by yer man. I've just bought an Omen which has twice the armour of both of them and a lot more dps so I should be able to do it now I'd say.

Loosing stuff is a vital part of this game, unlike in other games a real loss of estate, power and resources is involved when you die - this aspect isn't often for the faint of heart. I got killed and ransomed within the same hour I signed up after five years of absence in 1.0 space by some jerk who was bored and enjoyed can-flipping which I wasn't aware off it being changed meanwhile. But it didn't deter me to stick through it and I lost about half a billion worth of stuff about 2 months later which hurt alot more.

Guess that's why this game isn't for anyone, if you expect a straight PVE-friendly game you'll end up surprised alot. Almost every evil deed is allowed, from griefing, thieving,harassing,scamming over ninja-looting/salvaging your mission loot - and for some people that's their business and reason to play this game.

Sure, I completely agree, I wasn't looking for sympathy or even whining. I think it was my own fault anyway,I was probably in a low sec system and wasn't paying attention. He didn't even destroy my pod, which frankly would have been truly disasterous. I just wasn't used to the game and was looking for advice from the seasoned eve players. Back playing solidly now and enjoying it, grinding back to where I was (with the aid of some generous starter ISK from the Grid!). I wouldn't be as bummmed if it happened again now I know what the score is.

I think ultimately the ruthless ganky aspect of the game makes it seem more realistic and adds to the experience. It's better than it being a namby pamby pve game where there's no danger and you just grind a state of the art ship for the aesthetic value. It keeps you on your toes, gives you a healthy feeling of vengence and drives you to get to a stage where it wont happen again, well not at least without a decent fight. Although, maybe I'm probably not your average player in this game or even made for it in the long run because personally I still wouldn't go blowing up someone in a piece of shit ship with nothing of value in his cargo who's going about his business and isn't even flagged as nasty if I was in a tech XXIII megauberbattlecruiser, sixty thousand km away with four thousand megadeath nuclear missiles, just don't see the point. But maybe I will eventually
