Here is the place to share any tips/tactics you've come accross while slaughtering alliance in "The Valley" :)

To kick things off:
1: Alliance scum pushed you back into your final base? Want to mount a flanking attack and attack their forces from behind? Folow the frozen river out of the base! The alies cant get up it but you sure as hell can get down it making it a nice easy way to mount a flanking action, trapping the allies zerging inside the base in a swift pincer movement...
Or you can just use it to escape out to hand in any quests you need finishing I guess... :p

2: A good reason to do the repeatable quests: Alterac Valley Rewards

Take all your blood vials to the Tauran shaman boss in the cave in Frostwolf Stockade and you add to the summoning of the Ice Lord.
Once we Horde have the Ice Lord summoned, drag as many npc alliance as you can to him to feed his hunger for flesh. You will notice he gets bigger the more he feeds.
Re-supplying the Horde troops doesnt seem to be a problem, taking mines and getting ram hides and wolves is easy enough. The big problem is getting hold of the plans of attack that allow the wolf riders to attack. Ive yet to see the wolf riders charge and ive not been anywhere close to obtaining the plans yet.
A good tip if you want to see alliance suffer is try to lead groups of them into the minefields and watch them blow up as they chase you, very funny :)

The order to attack requires you to have a faction rating of "Friendly" or higher - a few APEs now have this and so can get assaults started. :)

Alterac Valley FAQ LONG POST omfg.

What level can I enter the valley?
Officially you can enter the valley at 51 but if you are planning on doing so make sure you let us know before you get there as you will need an escort to help you complete even the easy quests at that level.
Needless to say the vast majority of players are 55+ with the majority of those being 60.

Is there any real point in my going to the valley before 55?
Yes.
You can complete quests very fast in there and for decent xp+cash. Additionally if you are a fan of team or faction PvP there are some great fights to be had :)
Even if you just go for an evening then go back to regular levelling/instancing you will normally have a productive night.

Is it just zerg v zerg in there?
No, far from it.
Many people play it as if its just a huge battle royale but there are numerous things you can do in a 5 man team that can greatly influence the battle.

What about repair bills? do the mobs in there drop loot?
Yes they drop loot albeit not very often items. Runecloth drops in abundance however which is nice. Players also drop a small amount of cash and some items you can trade in for rep gain/cash and faction benefits to our guys fighting inside.

So what makes the Alterac valley battleground any different to say warsong gulch's capture the flag?
Firstly the limit is 40 v 40 in any instance of Alterac, there are multiple stratiegic objectives and choke points/strongpoints to be controlled and unlike warsong you have to work as a team to accomplish anything.
Rewards for gaining faction with the friendly npc tribe: Frostwolf orcs, also leads to cheap blue items and eventually epics!

My map doesn't work in here??
For some reason , some players (myself included) have to activate map twice to get the Alterac valley map working. Hit M, M, M and you should see the valley map.

We have just destroyed an enemy bunker/tower but there are still enemy npc's spawning there???
The enemy units from inside the tower/bunker will not respawn but those which spawn outside in the small revetment bits will respawn.

Ok i'm going to give it a try... what quests should I do and how do you complete them?
You can get quests from:
A) Just outside the instance tunnel before you enter. (2 quest givers).
B) Half way down the tunnel. (1 quest giver).
C) Inside the instance at frostwolf village (4 - 5 quest givers).
D) The wandering undead commander at the tower point area of the valley.
E) Inside iceblood garrison's tower (1 quest giver).
F) Inside the syndicate cave hidden near tower point on wildpaw ridge (1 quest giver)
G) To the east of Frostwolf village at the stables (2 quest givers).
** note that some quest givers once killed do not respawn! **

Thats all the ones I can think of right now.

Quests
(note the names of the quests below are not accurate)

Wolf taming.
Get the quest east of frostwolf village.
The wolves are very nearby to the north mainly.
Briefly you are tasked with supplying frostwolf mounts for the wolf rider npc's.
This is probably the simplest quest in the valley. Accept the quest and you are given a muzzle. take the muzzle and right click it when near a wolf (neutral mob). target the wolf and put up with it hitting you for 15 or so seconds after which yu will get the message "Frostwolf whimpers obediently".
Take the wolf back to the quest giver. When there first select: Please take this wolf (which will cause wolf and muzzle to disappear) then reselect the quest giver and choose complete quest.

You can take the quest repeatedly and earn easy reputation gain from the quest giver although you will only get xp+cash awarded on the first completion.

Why do the quest? Once enough wolves are tamed a patrol of 10 * 58 elite and a 60 elite wolf riders will spawn and patrol up to snowfall graveyard assisting our forces :)

Coldtooth supplies.
This quest can be completed at the same time as 'capture a mine'.
The mobs in the mine range from 55 - 58 elites with the addition of a lvl 60 boss (snivvle).
The mine is located close north west of frostwolf village.

The coldtooth supplies are piles of brown boxes inside and when taken they respawn every 30 - 45 seconds in the same locations.

The enemy mine 'irondeep' is located far into enemy territory on the north side of the main road. Identical layout to ours and mob levels the same too.

The quest giver is located inside frostwolf village on the north side just through the first main tower.

When he has received enough supplies you can get orders to launch a ground assault into the plains of strife which consists or 3 level 60 elite reavers :)

Proving grounds.
The cave you need to find for this quest is located east of frostwolf village and holds wildpaw gnolls level 52 - 60. The banner is in the deepest part. be careful of the level 61 elite yeti that is also inside in a small alcove :o

Brotherly love.
Quest giver is an undead guy on horseback who wanders from frostwolf village to just inside our lines. Note he does not respawn once the enemy kill him :/
The target he gives you is his brother who wanders in a similar fashion inside alliance territory along the road that leads to their irondeep mine.
He is a 60-61 elite.

master ryson's all seeing eye
Quest giver is located in the syndicate controlled cave on wildpaw ridge.
The all seeing eye is loacted inside the qinteraxe troll cave to the west of snowfall graveyard over the bridge.
Mobs are level 57 - 60 elites.

Taking the eye back to master ryson will complete part 1 and give you part 2 which asks you to plant a beacon in the courtyard at the alliance central base - dun baldar :s
if you manage to pull off part 2 you will force 5 level 60 elite commandos to spawn in the enemy base with a 61 elite leader :o IF.

Alterac ram hides
The quest giver is the wolf rider to the east of frostwolf village.
The hides you want spawn on the alterac rams (50 - 51 non elites) but unfortunately you will need to get right inside alliance territory to harvest them in decent numbers.
The best place is the east valley past stonehearth on the way to dun baldar.

These hides when returned enable the upgrade of your wolf riders.

Ground assault orders
Provided enough supplies from mines have been returned to the quest giver in frostwolf village AND you have a reputation with the frostwolf orcs of friendly or better, you can obtain the ground assault orders from the npc who collects dwarf spines in the village itself.

The orders need to be delivered to the commander at the catapult at the base of snowfall graveyard although it is believed he only spawns if horde control the snowfall graveyard.

lokhar the ice lord
This is the horde counterpart to IVUS the forest lord.
In the cave at frostwolf village there is a tauren primalist - she requests blood looted from fallen enemy). When she has received enough blood she will set off with a small npc escort to a summoning circle just south of snowfall and north west of iceblood GY's.

Once there 10 horde players must assist the summoning by right clicking the circle she creates.

If the above is all done, Lokhar the Icelord will spawn and he is one mean mofo :o
If he is kept alive he will grow larger and gain str/hp etc with every enemy npc or player he kills.
After he has killed a few he will stop wandering the plains of strife and head off towards the enemy base.

Lockhar can make a huge difference to the tide of battle and if combined with other special units who knows....

Fallen sky lords
Obtained from commander mulfort who wanders inside frostwolf village.
If killed he does not respawn..
The three skylords who need to be found are in:
1) The tower near stonehearth bunker up on the north east hill.
2) The lumber camp further into alliance territory on the north hills.
3) In the dun baldar north tower :s .

There is a follow up quest to release the fliers and escort them a bit but I have no more details on that.
Once one is released and gets home you can turn in the stormpike soldier/commander etc flesh to him to get the beacon.
The beacon must be placed and guarded wherever he requests and then a flying unit 60 elite will spawn that hurls lightning/fire for 1500 damage a shot over the plains of strife :o

Thats enough on the various quests for now.

Tactics
There are many things that a small team can do just in the quests but other productive things and tactics that can be used are:

minefields
These are side specific and enemy ones can be disarmed by hunters with the remove trap skill.
The mines deal 9 - 1500 damage that I have seen so standing on or just behind a minefield of yours can actually at times lure in the enemy to be blown into very tiny pieces :D

Snowfall GY
Due to its hilltop vantage point this is often the most fought over GY in the valley.
As our wolf riders patrol the valley alongside the GY... careful timing can be used to lure them into a GY assault by luring greedy alliance players after you. You might die doing this but if done right the enemy will have a world of pain as the wolfriders storm up the slope :)

Obviously there's room to add a lot to this but I think its enough to be going on with for the moment - by all means suggest add on's or amendments.

shad.

edit - your bbcode for bold doesn't work. I cannot be arsed removing all the tags i just put in so... fix it or ignore it I guess :p

You've put a '}' on one of your closing tags. Swap it to a ']' and you should get the bold text up properly.

Main domain server down at work = time to type :d

My life starts each day when I finish work and ends promptly on entering work the next morning :p

Of course I haven't included the long list of blue and even purple rewards you can purchase cheaply if you raise your faction standing to the frostwolf orcs. Anyone have a link to a list?

Frood you could have just pointed to your first post at the top of this thread! Shad could also start his new life by learning to read the previous posts.

Top post Shad - it's cleared up a lot of blanks for me. I was basically just running around previously, swiping at things when I could get close enough to do so.

Most important - take Elf heads, rip out dwarf spines, chop off gnome top-knots, and gather up a few human bone chips while you're at it.

Looting player bodies ftw! :D

A final word from me on this.

As you apparently get up to 5k cp from one fast session of CTF at warsong gulch - alterac it seems is made pointless for the vast majority of horde who think rank means anything (what it now means is you play a lot in warsong..).

5k for 45 mins max?

Another blunder that makes any strategic play (which alterac requires) unimportant.

The problem is people think with gaining lots of CP they also gain rank faster but it's like printing money, with each BG run CPs get worth less and less. In the end there are so many CPs that many people will experience a standstill in PVP rank advance.

One of these days I might be able to change my signature...

Okay, a bit of an update here: how much Frostwolf rep things are worth.

These were taken at Honored & Revered, so the actual figures for some of you may be more.

Handing in an enemy head/tuft/spine/bone chip:
1 Frostwolf rep (everyone)

Handing in 20 armour scraps:
1 Frostwolf rep (all)

Handing in 1 blood to summon the Icelord:
1 Frostwolf rep (all)

Handing in 5 blood to summon the Icelord:
5 Frostwolf rep (you, not sure if everyone gets it if you hand it in en masse...)

Handing in 10 Coldtooth supplies:
2 Frostwolf rep (all)

Killing Ivus, the Forest Lord (you need to be alive and close by when he keels over):
125 Frostwolf rep (if your raid tags him!)

Handing in quest to go from Honored to Revered:
165 rep

You also get rep at lower levels from normal mobs (guessing at one a chuck), elites (think the stormpike riders & commandos net 2 each), lieutenants (not sure of figures), handing in quests (variable) and so on. I should imagine the quest handins are all similar to the one above, but could be wrong.

The amounts of rep for each level are...

Neutral to Friendly: 3k
Friendly to Honored: 6k
Honored to Revered: 12k
Revered to Exalted: 21k

Yes, this does you need to live in Alterac Valley (whether playing or, ahem, AFK) for a fairly long while for the best rewards - I imagine every none caster class want's a Don Julio's Band. Prolly ought to offer a rep increasing service (charged by the copper per point or something). :P

Incidentally, one of the best strategies is to go in with 8 rogues and 2 druids in 2 groups within a raid and use them to storm towers and lieutenants right off the bat: if you kill the gloppy boss inside the fort type thing near the alliance front line and then the not so hard minions around the place, you'll have an easier time with no mob respawn.

Sadly Ivus no longer drops loot if you use guards to kill him, so if you're wanting things off him now, good luck. :(
