aye me :) hehe, not played that iMobster thing yet. any use? main reason is mmo on phone where ye get anally raped each time you use a 3g connection :( so limited to wifi spots when on the move.

unfortunatly the market seems to be full of very similar apps. i.e they all seem to be variants of the same theme, esp the games all tetris/jewel/airport landing types. have rooted mine so can use some of they tools like quick boot. If I was to be cynical I'd say most are varied implementations of the sample/tutorial apps that are out there I've seen in the books/websites tbh, but we all gotta learn somewhere right. in fairness tho the decent ones seem to be starting to roll out now (still early days relatively speeking) and I predict this android malarky will give Jobs a bigger headache then he planned for once it hits critical mass (around 3 years from now at a guess) and more phones are running it, not to mention the number of the iphone developers taht will be switching over to it due to Jobs latest mandate (and no it dosn't just effect flash. Java or any other VM type tech arn't allowed either).

currently have installed from the market:

Dolphin web browser
Auto answer - for hands free driving :)
Linda - File Explorer
AndFTP - FTP Client
Wifi Analyser - scan wifi hotspots, locate signal etc..
Net Nabber - My own wep cracker app for a certain crap national telecoms company. useless outside ireland :(
Screen Mode Widget - toggles phone stay awake/lock/screen off with no lock.
VNC Android - VNC client for remote desktop connections.
Dublin Traffic Cameras - Traffic camera updates over the web.
nswPlayer - media player
Stream Media Player - anotehr media player
Quick Boot - reboot tool (needs root access)
tricorder - general system test utility. allows to play with all the device's sensors but has a star trek tricorder interface lol.
google talk - no account yet tho

as for the games.

Doom
Quake 2
Quake 3
toonwarz - FPS shooter its.. meh so so
Air Control - land planes without crashing em into each other, Addictive little bugger
jewels - tetrissy type thing another addictive little bugger
SnesOID - Snes emulator
GensOID - Sega Megadrive emulator
Xpectroid - Speccy emulator \o/
Robo Defense - tower defense game
Brain Genius Deluxe - not used it much yet, heres hoping will make me brainy lol

rest are the stock apps (facebook/motonav - sat nav app/etc..) although have removed some (gmail etc..)

I had advanced task killer installed but I removed it as I thought it was feckin with my alarm clock. which instead turned out to be a linux kernel issue >< Replaced the kernal with updated version and all is good again so might re-install it :)

next up is the plan to write a hands free kit/front end for the car so hopefully (as I need it pretty badly) have that done sooner rather then later once I get a few free days to code it up.

next up is some sort of a half decent feckin media player so I can stream stuff from my pc or copy locally :) The in build ones grand if ye fancy converting everything to poxy ipod/iphone or mp4/H264 format >< I have about a terrabyte worth of shit I don't plan on converting anytime soon on the off chance I might actually watch it on the phone sometime. so I've been fiddling with on the fly transcoding via VLC player on the pc which seems to work for the most part, need to get a few more transcode scripts written/working correctly and then build a remote app for setting up playlists etc.. (have some preliminary work done, just not at the top of my list yet)

The Sony Xperia(?) looks a nice Android phone, a friend of a friend has one. Grid, I managed to find an alternative factory reset (the usual one didn't seem to allow the trackball to 'click'). The Imobster tag thing allows you to 'recruit' others (ie get a mob up).

As for apps, I have a tendency to go crazy once in a while, so (ronseal unless I say otherwise)...

Advanced Task Manager
Album Art Grabber
Android VNC
Astrid (scheduler type thing which I've *never* used)
Astro - File management
BBC News
Bebbled - Coloured blob game
Beebplayer - Plays stuff from BBC iplayer
Bloo - Facebook app
Bread Crumbz - Not used, but it allows you to create routes
Buka - Some game type thing
Celeste - Like Google Sky Map, but simpler and more informative
Chess
Colossal Cave Adventure
Easy Spirit Level
Enjoy World Cup - World Cup countdown widget. Entirely useless
Evernote - Note/image taking app
Feedr - RSS feed app
Footmob - Football app - scores, lineups, stats and stuff.
Free Dictionary
Game On - XBox live status monitor
Guardian Anywhere - Downloads Guardian online edition overnight - rather spiffy
Handcent SMS
iTweet
iMobsters
Isuu - Read Isuu magazines (such as Astonishing Adventures, featuring me)
Layar - Reality browser
Loot - Accounts management - have found I'm less broke at the end of the month
Movies
Mp3 Store - Amazon's MP3 store online
MyBackup Pro - Thank fuck I have this...
Opera Mini 5
Remote Recorder - Record stuff off Sky+ from phone
RockOn
ScanLife - Barcode scanner
Solitaire
SpacePhysics - Physics game
Sudoku Premium - yeah, I know, sad, but hey...
Urban Dictionary
Useless Facts
Wapedia
Wikitude
Zombie, Run! - GPS based zombie game.

nice dabs :) that sony does look cool.

oh yeah forgot about that barcode scanner app, tis handy. would love to try it out in the shops here just to see the look on the their faces as I create my online shopping list whilst browsing their stores lol. Unfortunatly would prob need 3G and that would mean another date rape with the rabid wilderbeasts :(

Seriously get this, 3G on vodafone.ie its 99c for 50mb download cap per day. however if you go over that 50mb limit you get charged 20 fucking euro per megabyte. ARE THEY FUCKING NUTS!!!! 50mb is like 10 mins on youtube FFS, what century are they living in??

answers on a postcard please to...

Despite the recession, Irelands still run by a bunch of thieving gypsies, and is less value for money then ever.

I really like Peggle on iphone and Plants vs Zombies is supposed to be good.

but... OMFGBBQLOL!!! I have just discovered that fighting fantasy (steve jackson choose your own adventure from the 80's) is out on iphone. I'm currently playing Warlock of firetop mountain. has all the original art and you play out the battles with virtual dice. WHEEEEEEeeeee... Deathtrap dungeon is also out.

If you were a mini-geek in the 80's you'd have loved these.

get the desire over the nexus 1, just for HTC sense, its awesome :)

i dont run a lot of apps, but:

chompsms (replace the default sms client, not that the default is bad, i just find this one easier to read and use, you can change the font and the colour of conversations all all sorts of other useless things that and handy but you never think about.

advanced task killer - best one i have found and you NEED something to kill apps on an android phone or they just sit there taking up memory and MUCH more importantly eating your battery.

opera 5 - no brainer really, although i like pinch to zoom on the default client so im using both depends on my mood.

calendar pad - MUCH better than the default calendar client, which just plain irritated me, seriously, the old nokia calendar was better than the default one, and i use that calendar for everything as i hate carrying a diary for work.

BBC news thing - its my default news site anyway so why not.

some facebook for android widget thing.

barcode scanner. handy but not essential, havent really used it yet other than for gimmick purposes.

games wish i have robo defence (as someone else further up, its pretty fun) and a game called age of conquest (lite version, i have yet to pay for anything off the marketplace) which is a sort of turn based galcon style game, its alright to waste half an hour on but the free version doesnt have enough options to make it worthwhile by itself unless you plan on paying for it, which i dont)

speaking of the battery, i havent actually installed any apps for it, but using just the default programs and widgets i have managed to get my battery life up to 3 days max and 2 days standard on a desire \o/ (unless i start watching lots of youtube or browsing constantly over 3g lol)

nice I've been hearing good things about the desire and the sense ui. some of the widgets (music, contacts etc..) look really cool. I'm pondering goin for a bill pay with no internet cap at some stage and might get one with the signup, I think it has the open bootloader too, so ye can load custom roms easier (Milestone's still signed the bastards, unlike the US version) so would make more sense for app development.

only really starting to mess with widgets and customisations properly. been more hung up about the innards (cough nerd) and fixing the odd OS bugs thanks to gaining root access aye that advanced task killers a handy app but dont worry too much about memory that wont bother the battary so much and the OS is clever enough to kill tasks when memory's needed. its more the background services and any ongoing/intermittent data sync's you should be worried about the GPS and Bluetooth and 3g esp murder the battary, wifi not so much.

That barcode things a good larf, I'd say you'd get all kinds of looks going about shops scanning a shopping list on the go so ye can upload to amazon when ya get home for savings galore lol. Google goggles can be fun but not tried it out on any landmarks or anything too fancy yet and Shazam's good fun too for music identification if ye dont have it.

Can't wait for Froyo, Nexus One owners go it last friday the gits >< So hopefully we'll get our mits on it soon, next month with any luck.
