Any thing by Abnett and the HH series are probably the best starting points for anyone thinking of reading 40k. Ciaphas Cain is the Black Adder of the 40k universe and brings some light relief from all the Bolter and chain-sword fests.
Gaunt has been compared to Sharp, and as a fan of both there are distinct similarities right down to the uniform green tassel jacket with red sash worn by gaunt, as shown on the omnibus covers.It wouldn't surprise me if Abnett has read Bernard Cornwell's Sharp series and subsequently influenced some elements when he's been writing the Gaunt books.

Aha, I was reading a piece where they promised to avoid having to pay for any big things, just special mounts and whatnot, cant see any new races coming in at this stage, they've pretty much maxed out on new classes with the wardens and runekeepers last year(to much hardcore fandom flaming 'but it's not in the books ffs omfg etc'). I'd like to play it to end game now I've gotton into the storyline stuff a bit so I hope they don't do anything too sneaky and greedy. At the same time, I'm not mean enough to expect to play for something so good for free, so as long as the cash needed is about the same as the current monthly 8 quid I'll be happy.
